John McIntire

Director/Advisor, Open English

John is an early stage investor in the education technology space, focusing on global B2C opportunities. He led the angel investment in and is a director (chairman 2010-15) of Open English, an online English-teaching school which has attracted over 400,000 students and has raised $120 million in venture capital. John is leading the financing and is the chairman of Yogome, a mobile games developer focused on engaging math and science games for elementary school children. Yogome, which has over 1.5 million daily active users and over 25 million downloads in 150 countries, is partnering with researchers at Yale University to optimize the educational impact of its game catalogue.

John is also a director or advisory director to four other companies in the translation, financial technology and software-as-a-service sectors.

He is actively involved in various non-profit initiatives related to his native Cuba, including being chairman of the Cuba Emprende Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization which supports the largest entrepreneur training program and the only micro business incubator/accelerator on the island. John is also a member of the Engage Cuba Policy Council and the Council of the Americas’ Cuba Working Group.

John is a Senior Advisor to Endeavor Global, the leading non-profit organization promoting entrepreneurship in the developing world, and has been involved in entrepreneur mentoring and selection with that organization for over a decade.

He retired in 2004 as a partner of Goldman, Sachs & Co, where he spent 12 years focused on Latin America. During his last four years there, he was Goldman’s CEO for that region, responsible for a diversified portfolio of financial businesses with approximately $400 million in revenue.

He graduated from Princeton University with an A.B. in Economics. Born in Havana, John resides in Darien, CT.
